the wardhole interviews: john hedrick!
On dating skateboarders, being a normie, and having your voice shine through in your jokes.
Second model slash comedian to be interviewed by wardhole - today we have John Hedrick! The first thing I think about when I think of John Hedrick is that there is NO “n” in his last name. The second thing I think about is how bubbly and silly he is. Part comedian, part “Rocket Power” character come to life - I love John’s chill but stoic presence that he brings to the stage, and I was super excited to dig into what he has got going on right now.
John hosts “The Shakedown” with some of his closest friends and was recently part of the New York Comedy Festival. Get tickets HERE for The Shakedown on June 3rd!
Without further ado - let’s hear from John!
wardhole: why did you pick the picture you sent over?
John Hedrick: My friend Kennedy took it and I like that the fisheye lens bends the building.
wardhole: what are you working on right now?
John Hedrick: I'm working on fixing my bed dude. Idk what's going on but its been hurting my neck like crazy. Got a new mattress topper, had two mattress toppers at one point, got new pillows, and everything but it still strains my neck and I get migraines from it. I think the floor in my room is uneven. It stresses me out because I can't relax when I sleep in my bed. Also if this question was about comedy work, I've been on a bombing run at open mics.
wardhole: what makes you laugh?
John Hedrick: Memes about niche things, "I'm forklift certified" "I'm throwing M&Ms at your BM kid full speed" just stuff that have spurred out of the blue and have no context
wardhole: what media are you consuming right now?
John Hedrick: been watching a lot of Bill Hader compilations on YouTube, so much so that I started watching Barry
wardhole: what advice would you give to younger you?
John Hedrick: Skate more and tell your parents that its better exercise than any other sport so you don't have to do swim team in middle school
wardhole: what advice would you give to a stranger?
John Hedrick: stop dating skateboarders
wardhole: how would you describe your artistic style to a normie?
John Hedrick: "We aren't so different you and I" I think my artistic style is pretty normie as is
wardhole: you're given 5 billion- what do you do with it?
John Hedrick: I pay for my nieces' and nephews' college, I buy my mom and dad separate houses (they need it), and then I invest the rest of it into the open mic scene in Bushwick
(Ok it’s giving AOC…)
wardhole: what is your artistic process for writing jokes?
John Hedrick: I've been struggling with this recently. A critique I got a few weeks ago was that I need to write with my voice more i.e. add some takes about things, let people know how I feel about certain situations. So I've been trying to write less about myself and more so how I feel about things. It's kind of an uphill battle currently because I'm so used to writing about funny stuff that happens to me rather than my thoughts on those events.
wardhole: what’s on your notes apps?
John Hedrick: grocery lists and my social security number
wardhole: who made you laugh recently?
John Hedrick: Alex Asifo, Milo Charles Hedrick, the "Send Hole" groupchat
wardhole: do you have any "white whales" in comedy - something you’ve wanted to tackle for awhile but haven’t?
John Hedrick: writing an hour and headlining union hall. i need to send some emails lol
wardhole: what is hack to you?
John Hedrick: Punching down and trying to get laid at comedy shows
